If you think that there is a holiday or observance for just about everything, you would be correct, and our pets aren’t left out! February 23rd is National Dog Biscuit Day and commemorates the invention of these delicious treats for our pets.
Believe it or not, the dog biscuit has a history that goes back more than 200 years! The first large-scale production was done by James Spratt, an electrician from Ohio who traveled to England to sell lightning rods! After noticing how sailors used “hardtack”, dry biscuits with a long shelf life, Spratt thought dog owners would appreciate this and changed his career path.
These first biscuits were made of wheat, vegetables, beetroot, and the “dried, unsalted gelatinous parts of Prairie Beef”. Spratt claimed that his treats were a primary food source for the dogs of the 1850s and beyond. Interestingly, Spratt’s company was bought by General Mills in the 1950s.

Today’s dog treats come in a huge assortment of sizes, shapes, colors, and flavors. Whether you have a giant breed, like a Mastiff or Great Dane, or you prefer the toy breeds who fit on your lap, there is a treat for every breed of dog.
With so many treats and options, it is vital to discuss the problem with TOO many treats for your individual pet. More than 60% of our dogs are overweight or obese and our tendency to share our food, along with energy dense pet foods, and all these treats are a big reason for this epidemic.
Experts state that treats should make up less than 5-10% of your dog’s total calories for the day. While everyone understands the desire to make your pet feel rewarded, too many treats are helping to cause problems in our pets. Many people don’t realize how many calories are found in many common treats!
Ask your veterinarian for the best treat recommendation for your unique pup! Depending on your dog’s body condition score, weight, and other medical factors, you may need to stick to specific treats.
