Turn back time to 2017 and we look at Presidential Pets! Reporter/photographer Adam Byers Dunn has a fascinating tour of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site with an extensive display of critters who have been in the White House over the years. Not just dogs and cats, either . . . fascinating!
UPDATE:
During his time in office, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have had several pets:
Champ: A German Shepherd who had been with the Bidens since 2008. Champ passed away in June 2021.
Major: Another German Shepherd, adopted from the Delaware Humane Association in 2018. Major made history as the first shelter dog to live in the White House. However, after several biting incidents, he was relocated to live with family friends in Delaware by December 2021.
Commander: A German Shepherd puppy gifted to President Biden by his brother in December 2021. Commander also exhibited aggressive behavior, leading to his removal from the White House after multiple biting incidents.
Willow: A gray tabby cat adopted in January 2022. Willow was named after the First Lady's hometown of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.
During his first term, President Donald Trump did not have any pets in the White House. In a 2019 statement, he mentioned that while having a dog might look good politically, he didn't have the time for one.
