Indiana Animal Welfare Conference shines light on Feline Fix by Five Months initiative

Updated: 1 day ago

The recent Indiana at the Indiana Animal Welfare Conference brought together passionate animal welfare advocates from across the state and beyond, and it was inspiring to witness their dedication to improving the lives of our furry friends. As Your Kitty Correspondent, I had the chance to speak with Cheri Storms, Executive Director of Pet Friendly Services of Indiana about the conference and of course, kittens!

  1. The Urgency of Spaying and Neutering Kittens

A significant part of our discussion revolved around the importance of spaying and neutering kittens early and the national campaign "Feline Fix by Five Months" to prevent unwanted litters. This proactive approach not only helps control the kitten population but also alleviates stress on shelters and rescues, ultimately benefiting the entire community. Cheri emphasized how this practice helps more than just the cats stating, "By five months, we can ensure that our kittens don't start reproducing. This will take a load off of everybody."

  2. The Importance of Networking and Training for Animal Control Officers

One of the standout features of this year's conference was the dedicated track for animal control officers. Cheri highlighted that Indiana currently does not have specific training for these vital roles. By fostering networking and collaboration among animal control officers, we can enhance their skills and ultimately improve the welfare of the animals they serve. It's a crucial step towards creating a more effective and compassionate animal control system.

  3. Mental Health Matters in Animal Welfare

We delved into the often-overlooked topic of mental health within the animal welfare sector. Cheri pointed out that while many people may think of animal welfare as a joyful field filled with happy cat and dog lovers, the reality is much more complex. She noted, "It's a tough sector to be in. It's dedicated, hardworking people. We're trying to provide a really wonderful experience for them." The conference aims to provide support and resources to help these dedicated individuals take care of their mental well-being, ensuring they can continue their important work.
