IndyZoo welcomes a new anteater!

Salvador is from South America and is 9 years old.

Meet our newest arrival at IndyZoo! Salvador, or Sal, is a 9-year-old Southern Tamandua (tuh·man·doo·uh).

Tamanduas are a type of anteater that live in trees in South America as most species of anteaters are found.

Species Facts:

- There are four species of anteaters - giant anteater, silky anteater, northern tamandua & southern tamandua.

- Their sharp claws and prehensile tails make them top notch climbers.

- When startled, they will stand up on their hind legs and use their front feet to defend themselves.

- They are mostly nocturnal.

- They use their forelimbs and claws for digging up insects like ants and termites, then use their elongated snout and tongue to slurp up prey. A single tamandua can eat up to 9,000 ants in a day.

- In the wild, they face many threats such as habitat loss, climate change, wildfires and especially road traffic.

Salvador facts:

- He came to the Indianapolis Zoo from our friends at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

- He loves to eat mealworms, banana and chicken flavored baby food

- He is really good at using puzzle feeder enrichment.

- He is an Animal Ambassador of the Indianapolis Zoo
