On December 2, Blue Ridge Beef announced a recall affecting 2-pound packages of its Puppy Mix product due to Salmonella contamination. Subsequently, 1,350 pounds of its Kitten Mix logs were also recalled, specifically identified as Lot N25-0716 (UPC 8542980013436).
These recalls were triggered when tests detected Salmonella, a harmful bacteria that poses serious health risks to both pets and their owners.
Health risks of Salmonella
Salmonella can lead to salmonellosis, which presents symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and vomiting in humans. In pets, the signs may include lethargy and dehydration. While some animals may recover from mild cases, serious infections can require hospital care.
Moreover, pet owners risk contracting Salmonella by not practicing proper hygiene after handling contaminated ingredients. The CDC advises washing hands with soap for at least 20 seconds after handling pet food. Failing to do so can lead to cross-contamination, with an increased chance of spreading the bacteria throughout the household.
