Weight loss drugs can be poisonous to pets! Here's why

Pet Pals TV host Patty Spitler was joined by Tom Dock, the communications manager for Noah’s Animal Hospitals, to talk about the dangers that weight loss drugs have on pets.

Why Ozempic is Dangerous to Pets

Ozempic, a medication primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes in humans, contains the active ingredient semaglutide. While it can be beneficial for its intended use, it poses several risks to pets. Here are some key reasons:

  • Toxicity: Semaglutide can be toxic to pets, particularly dogs and cats. Ingestion can lead to serious health issues.

  • Gastrointestinal Distress: Pets may experience vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain if they consume Ozempic.

  • Hypoglycemia: Ozempic affects insulin levels, which can lead to dangerously low blood sugar in pets, resulting in lethargy, seizures, or even coma.

  • Unintended Side Effects: Pets metabolize medications differently than humans, which can lead to unexpected and severe side effects.

  • Behavioral Changes: Neurological effects from the drug could cause changes in behavior, including disorientation or agitation.

Due to these potential dangers, it is crucial to keep Ozempic and other human medications out of reach of pets and to seek veterinary assistance immediately if ingestion occurs.
