Patty Spitler and Brandt Carter brought along Wiggles, a 12-week-old puppy in training, to the WISH-TV studios to educate viewers about Canine Companions. The non-profit organziation is celebratings its 50th anniversary.
Carter has raised 21 service dogs, but another volunteer, Pam, has raised an incredible 31. Canine Companions, founded in 1975, trains service dogs primarily for people with mobility challenges, filling a gap that existed for decades.
The group trains Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers for a variety of roles. In addition to mobility assistance, Canine Companions provides service dogs for hearing support and veterans with PTSD. The organization also trains facility dogs, which offer emotional support in places like courthouses, funeral homes and hospitals.
